Randy Cruz raises Certified AWA laying hens at Cruz Ranch in the small community of Sapello, about 15 miles north of Las Vegas, New Mexico. Chickens raised according to the AWA standards are given continual access to pasture or range to forage for insects and seeds, and have the opportunity to perform natural and instinctive behaviors essential to their health and well-being, such as scratching, pecking, and dust bathing. Scientific research shows that pasture-raised eggs contain three times as much vitamin E, seven times more beta-carotene, and twice the amount of omega 3 fatty acids as industrial eggs.
Randy is part of a larger resurgence of farming in the area and is an active member of the Los de Mora Local Growers’ Cooperative, Inc., a producer-owned cooperative made up of 35 small family farms and ranches. Selling through a cooperative offers many advantages: By aggregating and coordinating supply, for example, Los de Mora Cooperative has been able to secure larger market opportunities for individual family farm members that would be impossible to achieve on their own, such as egg accounts with local supermarkets.
Certified AWA pasture-raised eggs from Cruz Ranch are available in AWA-branded egg cartons through the Los De Mora Local Growers’ Cooperative at various local supermarkets, as well as direct to consumers. For more information, contact Randy at firstname.lastname@example.org or 951-500-4467.
